BOE Hosts LSIC Meetings

The Logan County Board of Education met several times throughout the month of October to host regular and annual LSIC meetings.

On Monday, October 5, 2015, the BOE met with Logan-area schools at LHS to discuss areas of focus and improvement. During the Logan meeting, Andrea Santos was recognized as the county’s 2015-2016 Teacher of the Year.

During its regular meeting on Thursday, October 8, 2015, the BOE approved the 2015-2016 Strategic Plan for Logan County Schools in addition to surplus equipment, contract agreements, travel requests, and parent volunteers.

Several area physical education teachers attended the meeting to express the importance of having Jump Rope for Heart during regular school hours. Logan County is consistently one of the highest fundraisers for the event in the state of West Virginia.

A presentation was given by Brian Lauck, President of the Logan County Education Association, as a follow-up from a survey taken by some Logan County Teachers. He said the survey represented a voice from teachers on how to continue processing things that are hindering them within the classroom.

On Monday, October 12, 2015, the BOE met at CRHS to host an LSIC meeting for all Chapmanville-area schools, and an LSIC for all Man-area schools was held on Monday, October 26, 2015, at MHS.

During the LSIC meetings, board members expressed concern about parent involvement within the schools and asked each school about projects and events they are having to reach out to parents.

Vice President Mark McGrew emphasized the importance of the issue by stating, “Community and parent involvement is vital to the success of a school.”

Schools have planned a variety of activities to increase parent involvement including parent workshops focusing on math and reading and after-school events.

During its regular meeting on Wednesday, October 21, 2015, the Logan County Board of Education approved contracts and agreements with the Town of Chapmanville, Logan Mingo School of Practical Nursing, and an MOU with Logan Mingo Area Mental Health. The BOE also approved the first readings of more than a dozen policy updates and revisions.
