Omar Hosts Leadership Day

Leadership has become an important focus for the students of Omar Elementary, and on Thursday, May 14, 2015, the school celebrated leaders with its second annual “Leadership Day.”

During the event, students welcomed parents and local representatives to learn about the school’s “Leader in Me” program and presented essays and songs demonstrating how the students promote leadership within the school. The Omar Student Lighthouse Team served as the student speakers for the ceremony.

Members of the Student Lighthouse Team include: Victoria Duncan (2nd), Emma Watkins (2nd), Jacob Muenich (3rd), Jameson Hamron (3rd), Charli Estrathers (4th), Ian Plumley (4th), Anthony Sloan (4th), and Bryce Davis (4th). Essay presentations were given by: Kiera Rorie (2nd), Cameron Allred (4th), Jayce Wolfe (1st), Becca Stacy (3rd), Raydah Damron (4th), Asthon Starr (K), and Kieran Tolliver (2nd).

The “Leader in Me” program promotes the “7 Habits of Happy Kids,” which students recite at the beginning of each morning after school. The habits are: Be Proactive, You’re in Charge; Begin with the End in Mind, Have a Plan; Work First, Then Play; Think Win-Win, Everyone Can Win; Seek First to Understand then to Be Understood; Synergize, Together is Better; and Sharpen the Saw, Balance Feels Best.

John Mullins, Principal of Omar Elementary, said since the school has implemented the “Leader in Me” program, he has seen a difference in students, faculty, and parents. He hopes the school will receive the program’s coveted “Lighthouse Status” for the 2015-2016 school year.

The “Leader in Me” program has been implemented in approximately 1,500 schools worldwide, but there are just over 130 schools worldwide and 2 in the state of West Virginia that have received “Lighthouse Status.” If Omar receives the designation, it will be the first school in Logan County to receive it. A school can only receive the Lighthouse recognition when “the results a school is achieving and the impact it is having on staff, students, parents, and the greater community.”
